How to Level the Ground for a Pool Without Digging

Before you can start enjoying your pool, it’s essential to ensure that the ground is level. You can level the ground for an above-ground pool without heavy machinery. Uneven water levels can be inconvenient and pose risks to your property and family. This guide will walk you through the process of leveling the ground for your pool.

Mark the Pool Location

This marked area will help identify any high or low spots that need to be leveled before installing the above-ground pool.

Check the Highs and Lows

Place the boards around the marked circle, starting from the center and extending towards the edge. Use a level to ensure the first board, positioned at the pool’s edge opposite the center, is flat on the ground.

Using a measuring tape, lift the other end of the board until it’s level. This will identify the lowest point.

Secure the Boards

Flip the board over and drill a 3/8-inch hole through the center of the end positioned at the pool’s center. Align this hole with the center of your pool area to anchor the end. Use a hammer to drive the metal bar through the hole until the board is firmly secured.

Pour Sand into the Area

Sand the area around the pool, paying extra attention to the low points. Add more sand to these areas to ensure the ground is leveled properly.

Build a Large Level

In step three, you’ve already begun making the level. You’ll now need to use duct tape to attach the level (or a longer board), such as the one in your toolbox, at the center of each board. Wrap the ducttape around the boards, level and board. Make sure the board is flat before you secure it.

Install a Metal Ring Screw at the End of Your Board

This should be the side nearest to the pool perimeter. Tie the rope around the metal screw ring, leaving enough slack for you to easily pull the board while walking around the pool.

Compact the Sand

Use a tamper and water to moisten the sand, then compact it with the tamper until it becomes firm. Once the sand has been compacted and fills the space, you can use the homemade leveling device to make the surface even.

Rake and Circle until Level

Begin walking around the pool perimeter while pulling the rope attached to the end of the boards. Keep going until all the high and low spots are leveled. You might have to add more sand and compact it. After that, go around the boards again until the ground is level.
