By this point in 2020, I’m sure we’re all ready to just blast off this planet — or at least I am. Not to mention, after recent news broke that potential life has been detected on Venus, I wouldn’t mind poking around up there. I guess the main dilemma is that I wouldn’t really have anywhere to stay.
Fortunately, travel booking platform Hotels.com, is working on a solution that would allow simple Earth dwellers the opportunity to stay up in outer space. This week it announced its goal to become the first online travel site to provide future hotel bookings in space. A pretty sky-high goal? Absolutely. However, Hotels.com showed its dedication to the mission by creating the website, onesmallstepforhotels.com, which gives travelers a glimpse of what the future of zero gravity “Hotel Life” could potentially look like.
On the site, you’ll find sample renderings that show what the lobby, the pool, the mini bar, and other common hotel amenities would look like in a potential space hotel. Let’s take a peek!
Welcome to space! Checking in? Right this way.
Did you carry any luggage with you today? One moment, it may be floating around in space.
In the meantime, feel free to slip into your space suit robe and moon boot slipper set. Both are made using temperature-controlled technology to keep you nice and cozy during your stay.
Step right in to your stellar space suite! After traveling lightyears away from home, you’re probably going to want to get some shut eye. Feel free to request a wakeup call. From the looks of it, you definitely won’t fall back asleep after this one.
Hungry? Unfortunately, due to the hotel’s location in outer space, there aren’t any restaurants within walking/floating distance. However, room service is most definitely available and guests will be able to order it in the most futuristic way.
Looking to go for a quick swim? This outdoor space pool is a total game changer!
Don’t worry, even in outer space, you’ll be able to grab a drink. Each room will be equipped with a “Meteor Minibar” for some out-of-this-world drinks. Think: cosmic cosmos, Martian martinis, and snacks you definitely won’t find at your local supermarket on Earth.
Did I mention that this robot butler will serve you your drinks?
Pretty neat, right? Unfortunately, there’s no tentative date on when hotels in space will actually become a thing, but just know that it’s being worked on.
In the meantime (and in the spirit of all things space), Hotels.com is hosting a space-themed gift card giveaway. The first 20 people who can prove that they have one of the eight planets in their legal first, middle or last name (ex: Venus Williams), will receive a $250 Hotels.com gift card (yes, the gift card can be used on Earth!). You can submit your application here.
As for now, I’ll just keep my feet on the ground and admire space from up above. I’m super stoked for the blue moon on Halloween!
